my 15 seconds of extremely localized fame

Saturday night I had the unique experience of seeing myself on “the big screen”. My son and some friends entered a movie in the “Campus Movie Fest” competition (teams of students are given a camera, tripod and mac laptop for one week and they have to complete a 5 minute film in that week) and I had a small role in their film. [Yes, I have a son in college. I told you I was old]

Anyways, the best 16 films from the handful of colleges who participated (which resulted in hundreds of films) were screened Sat night at a huge old opulent theatre right in the heart of Boston’s Theatre district (The Colonial Theater). Since his film beat out the other couple of dozen from his university to win the “Best Movie” award, it was one of the ones shown. Very fun. Of course my son had the starring role, and theoretically I was there to support him, which I was. But still, I was looking forward to seeing myself onscreen too.

An even odder experience was getting recognized while in line to enter the theatre. As I was waiting in line, one of the organizers was walking the line asking if everyone had their tickets already. When I said I didn’t, he walked me inside to the ticket office and as we walked he said “We all LOVED that movie you are in”. w00t. I am a micro celebrity. heh.

update: In looking for a pic of the Colonial Theatre I discovered it has been in operation since 1900 - it's first show was the "stage spectacular", Ben-Hur.

well here's the scoop. It's not a "family appropriate" film so I don't really want to post a link to it here. In fact, it had the distinction of being the only film at the show for college aged students and friends which the organizers preceded with a content warning. It's the combo of subject matter/language that makes it not appropriate for all ages. And while it's intended to be humorous, I am sure a great many people would not find the subject or execution funny.

If anyone is really that interested in viewing it, send me a PM and I'll send you a link with a disclaimer and brief synopsis so you can decide whether it's really something you want to watch.

ps. My part is of course "family appropriate".

pps. I am not really that old, I was just a promiscous boy - my son was born when I was 12 after all. I look old in the video because they had to do makeup and prosthetics to make me look like I was older.

I'd be interested, but I'm assuming my being under 18 means I qualify as a child and thus non eligible to see VR show his elite acting skills :(

No leet acting skills I am afraid.

As for the underage thingie - it's not that the film is going to scar anyone for life, it's just that the OoH forums have some VERY underage visitors and I don't want to post a link here to anything their parents-also-OoHers (or in the case of CK, MRS HS) might object to their viewing of.

Heh... had no idea you had a son in college, vr. In the internet its often easy to forget how varied users are in age. And to think I feel old when people think I'm the father of my triplet sisters. Must be the facial hair... or I'm just too tall to be their brother. Its like a 15 year gap between them and me! Actually even they have accidently called me dad. Now I feel older thinking about it. :?
