Astronomy buffs: Perseid Meteor Shower

Postby Baak » Sun Aug 12, 2007 1:50 pm

Tonight (Sun Aug 12) through tomorrow morning (Mon Aug 13) the Perseid Meteor Shower should be at its peak. This is when the Earth passes through the dust trail left by the Swift-Tuttle comet, which is why it happens every year.

Tonight they become visible in the NE, and early Monday morning before dawn it's more towards the East.

Here's a time-lapsed photo from last night:

And a neat site that shows animation of what it looks like, along with info on a total Lunar eclipse coming on Aug 28:

And a site for more info:

Far out. I love that combined photo you linked to (many 30-sec shots over 6 hours combined, showing lots of meteors). Neat!

It's an especially good year for it (weather permitting of course) because it's a New Moon, so it will be nice and dark. 8)

My son mentioned them this morning. He and friends drove west of the city (Boston) last night to find a darker sky. Said there were quite a few to be seen.

I saw it, there were a few good streaks even with the light noise.
